Charlottesville is about 70 miles northwest of Richmond, and 90 miles west of the Chesapeake Bay. Just two hours from Washington D.C., it offers quiet country retreats and horseback rides in nearby Shenandoah National Park, the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as a wealth of history that includes the homes of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.
It’s been named best town for food lovers by Wine Magazine; best college town in the country by Traveler’s Today; the country’s favorite mountain town by Travel & Leisure; and one of the happiest and healthiest places in the US by Business Insider.
The concentration of restaurants has made it a draw for visitors. The historic main street is a popular destination for food, wine and music. Virginia vineyards are known for white and some surprisingly good reds.
The city possesses a special mix of college-town and historic amenities. The commercial downtown area is separated from the campus and a small commercial area by a railroad grade; that small commercial area and the campus could star in any film about college life. Streets all through town, including the residential districts near campus, are shaded with abundant magnolias and other shade trees. Most of the town is easily accessed by foot or bicycle.
The city’s opportunities for entertainment and recreation are plentiful, too. The rich experiences provided by the presence of the University of Virginia can’t be overstated, from music to film festivals to theater and more. Charlottesville’s downtown mall is a fixture of its dining, entertainment and retail scene, and has become perhaps the city’s most popular meeting place for students and non-students alike. More than 120 retail shops and numerous restaurants keep the mall bustling, as do venues for music, theater and film.
